Judy Anderson Wahlander

Lafayette, CA

After DVHS, I attended UC Santa Barbara (A.B. Home Ec. 1969); UC Berkeley (Teaching Credential 1971); Oxford University, Magdalene College, England (1972 summer program); Cordon Bleu Cookery School – London, England (Summer 1983); and Saint Mary's College, Moraga (Masters in Counseling Psychology and School Counseling 1987-1990). I've lived and worked in Santa Barbara, Berkeley, Walnut Creek, Lafayette, Dublin, Castro Valley, and Moraga, plus Glenbrook, Lake Tahoe, Nevada. My employment has included teaching at Dublin High School; Kitchen/Interior Design consulting (which I still do for friends); catering and teaching cooking classes at Two Good Cooks in Berkeley; and high school counseling at Redwood H.S. in Castro Valley and Campolindo, where I retired as head counselor in 2010. My husband William and I have 3 children, Kristina, Michael and Lisa, and 2 grandchildren, Laura and Clara. I enjoy sewing and crafts of many kinds (quilting and I even crocheted my own wedding gown and designed/constructed Kristina's gown); cooking, baking, brewing beer, reading historical novels, and vegetable gardening. We enjoy traveling in England and Europe. I’ve volunteered at St. Perpetua School, Lafayette; Lafayette Junior Women's Club, and National Charity League. My special DVHS memory is riding to school every day with my mother! (And my 3 kids went to school with me every day at Campolindo!)

Pam Baird

Arkansas

I’m originally from Memphis, Tennessee. After moving to Walnut Creek, I attended Parkmead, DVHS, and UC Davis. I left California following a Marxist faculty coup in the UCD history department where I was doing graduate study and retreated to rural Missouri, where I met my husband Mark. We’ve been in Arkansas for over twenty-five years now. Mark is an engineer and professor of community and economic development at the University of Arkansas. It’s been a fairly quiet life, but we had a front row seat for the early Bill and Hillary antics. (All the rumors are true!) I completed my doctorate at a global virtual Christian seminary in Indiana, served as director of the women’s program at that institution for many years, and taught philosophy at a local college. Mark and I have two daughters, one in California and one in London, England, and four grandchildren. We like dogs, horses, classic cars—I’m still looking for a ’52 Studebaker—and RV travel along Route 66. Presently I’m writing a personal history of our generation’s turbulent years and having a great time reviewing all those experiences with new understanding.

Sue Bane

San Jose, CA

I moved to Walnut Creek in 1955. I attended Buena Vista Elementary, Parkmead Upper, Del Valle, Diablo Valley College (AA 1967), and Chico State University (BA-Psychology 1971). I have lived in Oakland, Walnut Creek, Chico, Los Gatos, and San Jose. I worked for the Association for Retarded Citizens for over ten years. I worked for Integral Systems from 1983-1994. I started off in the word processing pool for several years. I was selected by the Senior Vice President of Sales to become his administrative assistant. It was the best job I ever had. In 2007 I developed health problems and moved to the South Bay to be nearer family. I retired in 2012. I live with my niece and take care of her boys while she is working.

Lynn Barron Gursky

Brentwood, CA

I attended Lafayette Elementary, Spring Hill Elementary, Burton School, then Fairview and Del Valle. I went on to UC Santa Barbara and met my future husband, Roy, when I was a freshman. I transferred and graduated from UC Berkeley. Roy and I were married in 1968 and I moved to his home town, Brentwood, where I have lived since. I received my California Teacher’s Credential at the University of the Pacific. I was a teacher and Director of Curriculum at Knightsen School for over thirty years. Roy and I have two sons, Nathan and Stephen. They have given us five beautiful grandchildren ranging in age from 16-6, Matthew, Lauren, Sarah, Sophie, and Evan. Sadly, I lost Roy to cancer in 2009 and now have a second career managing our Gursky Ranch Country Store. I have enjoyed a bit of traveling, but most of my spare time is devoted to family and volunteer activities in our community. I feel the years at Del Valle were like an idyllic time warp compared to high school today. Miss Silva made me wear my gum on my nose and Mr. Gertson liked to wake up zoning students with a smack on the desk with his yardstick, but we were safe and very innocent by today’s standard…how lucky we were!

Gene Blazick

Lafayette, CA

I attended Montecito and Parkmead prior to DVHS and later graduated from California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) San Luis Obispo, with a BS in Architectural Engineering. I met my wife (Susan) at Cal Poly and we were married in 1975. In 1977, we bought a VW Campmobile, picked it up in Germany and for 5 months (12,000 miles) we “camped” throughout Europe. Years later we did a similar 10-week camping trip with our son (Christopher) and daughter (Diana). What a blast and it gave our kids an opportunity to see a world other than their home in Lafayette. In 1978 I joined Earl and Wright and spent the next 6 years designing offshore platforms for the oil industry; two years of which were spent in Australia. In the last 25 years I received my civil and structural professional engineering licenses while working for various Oakland-based engineering design firms supporting the maritime industry. During this time I became a Principal Project Manager and Western Division Market Segment Leader for Port and Maritime Engineering for both CH2M HILL and subsequently URS Corporation. Since retiring in 2013, I’ve been pursuing my passions of fly fishing, sport fishing, skiing, woodworking and tomato gardening. Both my son and daughter are now married and live in the Bay Area, and my granddaughter Samantha is 19 months old.

Jon Blegen

Rio Vista, CA

Hello all, Jon Blegen writing from Rio Vista, California where I have lived since 1974. My wife’s name is Janet and we have two daughters, Kelsey who recently married and is featured with me in the photo, and Shaye. I attended Fairview with many of you prior to our Del Valle years, and afterword the U. C. campuses at Santa Barbara and Davis. I have been an attorney since 1972 with most of my career devoted to my private practice; however, I did serve as the Rio Vista City Attorney for twenty-five years and since 1996 have been an administrative law judge, presiding over cases in the state prison system. Finally, I recently retired after serving thirteen years as manager of the Solano County Abatement District. I intend to continue practicing part time, as well as serving as judge. I am devoted to the game of golf, an avid swimmer and hope to start trout fishing again. High School memories include starting our golf team, performing in The Night of January 16th, and the silly language shared with my buddies in “The Clan”. To conclude, I am very thankful that many of our class members remain my closest friends.

Paul “Tom” Bonilla, Jr.

I was employed as a manufacturer’s representative for housewares and hardware, and Electrolux Vacuum Cleaner Company. I have one grandchild. I’ve been a collector of Coca Cola memorabilia and Hard Rock Cafe pins, and I’ve traveled the world. I volunteer at my church and Mission Solano Community Outreach Center in Fairfield. My DVHS memories include cross country competition and Mr. Tanner’s crafts class.

Helen Brauns White

Pebble Beach, CA

I attended Notre Dame des Victoires in San Francisco until 6th grade when my family moved to Walnut Creek. I briefly attended Buena Vista, then Parkmead and then DVHS. I graduated from UC Davis and completed a nutrition internship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Tom and I met at UC Davis and were married in 1971. I worked at Kaiser Hospital in Walnut Creek, until we moved to Reno in 1977. I worked for St. Mary’s Hospital in Reno. In 1989 we moved to Pebble Beach and I have been Director of Dining Services at a retirement community in Carmel Valley ever since. It has been a fun and challenging career. We have 2 sons, Patrick and Bryan, living in the Bay Area and 2 beautiful grandchildren – Ethan and Ella. Tom’s international business takes us overseas often, and has provided the opportunity to make many interesting friends and visit exotic places. We love hiking around the world, and exploring places locally on the California Coast and near our Cabin at Lake Tahoe. The lake is so low we have been walking the perimeter of the lake that is normally under water. There are so many fond memories of Del Valle – Mr. Anthony’s watching over us in student council, Mr. Russell showing war movies, Mr. Geertson trying to keep some control over our chemistry experiments and class and Mrs. Bachelor making us sew aprons. It was a happy time.

Moira Briody Cockrell

Walnut Creek, CA

Born in San Francisco, my family moved to Walnut Creek in 1956, where I attended Parkmead, then DVHS. DVC and Cal State Hayward followed with a degree in Sociology. Alameda County Welfare Department was my calling for 8 years, but by then I had married my soul-mate, George. Good-by ACWD and hello motherhood to our two beautiful daughters, Beth and Sarah. After many volunteer jobs, part-time jobs, re-model the house jobs, I returned to DVC for a certification in Library and Information Technology. That brought my current job with MDUSD in elementary and middle school libraries. Hope to retire in about 2 years and hit the road with my guy to see some sights. Our daughter Sarah has blessed us with 1 and 2/3 grandsons, Logan (7) is entering second grade at Parkmead, and our yet-to-be-named guy is due in September. Still in Walnut Creek and still connected to dear friends, Terri Timmer, Kathy Howard and Kathy Gainor, for our annual get-away. DVHS will always bring memories of fun, friends, and Janice Prince (Eng), Walter Hoy (Bio) and Phil Elwood (Gov).

Nancy Burrows Alsop

Redwood City, CA

I attended Parkmead Elementary and Middle School. After Del Valle I attended Brighham Young University and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. I married Doug Alsop in 1969 and moved to Redwood City. I am the mom of 3 children, Diane, Tom and Mark and grandma to Cora 5, and Calvin 2. While the children were still little, a friend and I started a chocolate business which made my children quite popular with their friends. Later, I studied tourism at Canada College and opened my small travel business, specializing in group travel and cruises. Later, I worked with my husband in his family's law firm as a legal secretary. In 2007 we closed the office and moved to Prague, Czech Republic where we lived for a year and a half and did volunteer office work for our church. It was fabulous experience. My husband and I love to travel and have been on about 36 cruises. Our greatest cruise adventure was a 30 day trip around South America. One fun memory I have of Del Valle is smelling the freshly baked cinnamon rolls at 10:00 am for brunch. We were so spoiled.

Nancy Campbell Bell

Olympia, WA

I moved 10 times and attended 6 different schools prior to Del Valle (Fall 1962). I went to Chico and graduated June 1969. July 1969 I married Jack Spaulding and started teaching. The next 28 years I helped open and run 3 preschools, two with daycare. Our first daughter Dominique was born July 1971 and May 1973 our second daughter Andrea was born. Very sadly, Jack and Dominique died in an automobile accident June 1975. Life does go on and thank goodness has its way of healing. Andrea and I were introduced to Bruce Bell, a most kind and understanding man. Sept. 1976 “we (Andrea too!) got married.” Oct. 1977 a son Patrick was born and June 1978 Bruce graduated from Vet school. Our life has been very full. Andrea lives in Olympia and has 3 sons Alex 12, Nathan 8 and Caden 6. Patrick lives in Fountain Valley, CA and is an opera-singing magician. We travel and enjoy hiking. We have a large garden that keeps me very busy. I will always be thankful to Mary Gill Lake for befriending the “once again new girl.” My senior year was the best. Good times with good friends!

Karen Campbell Mackie

Fort Myers, Florida

After living and working as the dental office manager for my husband, Bill Mackie, in Broomfield, Colorado for 31 years, he and I retired to Florida. Although we are not near our children, Marc, Ryan, and Brett and their families since retiring, we are still close. We feel blessed to have them and our wonderful grandchildren, Makayla, Declan, and Cash in Colorado; Olivia and Reid in Virginia; and Caiden and Carter in Colorado. We live on the 12th green at Colonial Country Club and keep active with dinners, social events, and the local community theater. We love to golf, cruise, and swim. We recently returned from a two-week tour of Scotland where we traced our family history. Although we live on the opposite side of the U.S. now, I still think of Walnut Creek as my high school home.

Howard Carmona

Yorba Linda, CA

I attended Montecito, Fairview, DVHS, DVC and Chico State College. After graduating I lived in Oakland, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, Placentia, San Jose and since 1987, Yorba Linda. My entire working career was in the food business in sales positions for Hormel, Cargill and Jennie-O Turkey Store. I retired in 2012 and now spend my hours enjoying playing golf about 3 times a week, plunking out a few tunes on the piano and guitar, and tending to our family activities. I married Judi Steen (class of 66 –Campolindo HS) in 1976. We are lucky to have our two children, Keith and Mark, and our two grandchildren living here in Yorba Linda. We lead very busy lives. Judi serves on the local school board, I’m secretary of our men’s club and serve as the chairmen for Tee It Up For the Troops Golf Tournament. Proud to say we have raised over a million dollars over the last 8 years to support veterans in need. We have travelled enough to know that our favorite place is home. Looking back at my years at DV I know I tried to be the funny guy and was less than serious about the school work. But in the end it has all worked well for me and I’m looking forward to seeing some old familiar friendly faces at the reunion.

Michael Carpenter

Pleasant Hill, CA

I have many fond memories of my high school years where I made some life-long friendships and had some crazy times. After high school I attended DVC for a short time and was drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam. I got my BS degree from Cal State Hayward and also a Real Estate/Brokers License. I retired from East Bay Municipal Utility District as Superintendent of Water Treatment and Distribution. I have been married to my wife, Gail, for 47 years. We have 3 children Christopher, Michelle, and Cynthia and 5 grandchildren Samantha, Seth, Justin, Bodhi and Phoenix. We are living in Pleasant Hill and lived outside of Georgia (while I was in the Army). We have enjoyed camping and have toured parts of Europe, China, and visited the area of Vietnam where I had been stationed. We have been on a few cruises and hope to cruise to Peru next March. I have been fortunate to survive 3 heart surgeries for genetic valve issues as well as a cardiac arrest in Nov. of 2010. Unfortunately, I had a stroke during the last heart surgery, which has left me with aphasia (difficulty communicating). Life has been and is good.

Bob Cunningham

Rancho Santa Fe, CA

I attended Montecito, Fairview, DVHS, DVC and UCB. While at DVC I was married for a short time to Patty (Acalanes ’65), and we have a wonderful son together, Matthew. We divorced in 1971, and a few years later I went back to school at CAL to chase a dream and study architecture. I opened a small building and development company in Walnut Creek, and then expanded into Southern California. It slowly grew, and I moved to the San Diego area where I retired about 10 years ago. In 1978 I married Rosemary, (from Germany) and we are blessed with a wonderful daughter (Karen 35). Rosemary was a Flight Attendant for American Airlines during the first few years of our marriage, this gave us opportunities to see much of the world, and we traveled quite a lot before starting a family. Things worked out pretty well, I’ve developed a passion for golf over the years, and we have the good fortune of living in a golf community now so I am able to play almost every day; and both of my kids and their families all live nearby. 50 years……wow !!

Bobbie Curran Royse

Bella Vista, AR

I’ve lived in California, Oregon, and Arkansas since high school, and worked as a dental assistant. I am married to Jerry Royse. We have two children, Bill and Ann, and three grandchildren, Sommer, Maggie, and Daltry. I enjoy painting and volunteering at my church’s annual vacation Bible school and the local hospital.

Countries visited include: Canada, Mexico, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Greece, Turkey, and South Africa., as well as about 6 months in Japan in 1987. A 5-week trip to South Africa in 2006 - 2007 was the travel highlight of my life. I love to garden and manage my little micro-farm in Tennessee.

Lisa Dawson Levering

Carmichael, CA

I started Kindergarten at Buena Vista School in Walnut Creek and moved to Lafayette in 1959. It was very fun to discover some of my Buena Vista friends when I got to Del Valle. I graduated from Cal Poly, SLO (BS/Home Economics) in 1969. It wasn’t a very useful degree unless you were going to teach, and that was not in my DNA. I did learn a lot about cooking and sewing! I have lived in Carmichael (Sacramento) since 1976. Before moving back to Northern California with my husband we lived in Los Angeles and Denver. After a stint as an assistant buyer for Bullocks Dept. Store in Southern California, I was a stay at home mom for the next 20+ years. After 24 years of marriage, I divorced my husband and then I went to work. I was a travel agent for 15 years, retired, and now I love to travel the world. I have two daughters and 3 ½ grandchildren. My younger daughter, Kate, is an actress, singer, and dancer who spent 5 years on Broadway. Those years were very fun. 50 years sure have gone by quickly!

Suzzetta Degan Capilato

Walnut Creek, CA

I was born in Oakland, California and moved to Walnut Creek in 1953. I attended Parkmead Elementary School before DVHS. I earned an AA degree in Business from DVC in 1967 while working full time at Capwell’s in Walnut Creek. I have had a long and successful career in retail. After Capwells, I worked 20 years at I. Magnin. I met the love of my life in 1988, Tony Capilato, we married at Lake Tahoe and moved to Laguna Hills. I continued my career with Bullocks Southern California where I received the Outstanding Customer Service Award in 1995. When Bullocks closed I began my current position at Neiman Marcus. After Tony passed away unexpectedly, I moved back to Walnut Creek and have now worked at Neiman Marcus for the past 20 years. I also lived in Napa for 7 years caring for Lisa Dawson Levering’s mother in addition to my working at NM. While in New York City in August 2001, I had lunch at the World Trade Center and have never forgotten how amazed I was to be 110 stories high, never imagining that one month later it would be gone. I still love my work and commute on BART 5 days a week. Maybe I’ll retire someday!

Helen (Penny) Dyer Setterfield

Grants Pass, Oregon

I attended Burton, Fairview and Del Valle. Colleges were Colorado College, San Fernando Valley State, and graduation from UC at Hayward. Post graduate work at American River College. Marriage for 20 years to my high school sweetheart ended when he walked out on all of us in 1991 (we had six children, five being adopted special case kids). That started what I think of as my nightmare years as a single parent of six from 6 to 17 years old. I taught in various venues for about 25 years and then moved into science editing in 1998. I never wanted to marry again, but in my editing work met Barry Setterfield, an Australian astrophysicist and wonderful Christian man. We were married in 2000 and I never knew a marriage could be so good. His work has taken us to many countries and we have friends all over the world. We live in Grants Pass, Oregon now, with Chris, our youngest (at 30) who contracted encephalitis when he was three and will always be profoundly retarded. We chose to keep him and not institutionalize him. We have eleven grandchildren, do rescue work with horses and other animals, and continue Barry’s research, although we can no longer travel due to health reasons. I raise most of our own food, love gardening, and pray that my life will remembered as a testimony to how Christ can change and work through a life. We can be reached through our website at www.setterfield.org.

Karen Edman Burnett

Sunnyvale, CA

I attended Del Valle starting junior year when my family moved to Lafayette. Previously, I attended high schools in Denver and Pacifica. After graduation I went to UC Santa Barbara for three years and transferred to Berkeley senior year. Several years later I went to graduate school at San Jose State. I married Douglas Burnett in 1968 and we have one son, Christopher. Doug went into the US Air Force as a pilot (Vietnam, remember) and during his career we lived in Texas, California, Turkey, Idaho and Germany. We divorced in 1992 and I now live in Sunnyvale with Michael Knaebel. I have masters degrees in Library Science and Public Administration. For almost 40 years I worked (mostly) in public libraries, retiring in 2009 as the Library Director for the City of Mountain View. Being a librarian was a wonderful, challenging and rewarding career. I now work as a home-based travel agent and spend much of my time traveling or thinking about travel. I am working on that bucket list of places I want to see...mostly because they are there. Besides travel, other interests include gardening, cooking, reading, long walks and lunches with friends, and volunteering at my church. What I remember most about Del Valle are the excellent teachers including Mr. Elwood, Mr. Hoy, Mrs. Nagoda and Mrs. Buckette.

Chrys Ennor Copp

Oakdale, CA

I was born in San Francisco but moved to Lafayette and started 5th grade at Burton Valley. I then went on to Fairview and Del Valle. I graduated from the University of Pacific (B.S. ’70). I worked as a bacteriologist for 20 years and taught classes at Stanislaus State and Miller Clinical Lab. For the last 20 years I have owned and operated Hallmark card and gift stores. I met my husband Hal at UOP. We have two daughters, Hillary and Whitney. We have two granddaughters, Kylie (5) and Kelsie (9 m). Luckily our daughters live in San Francisco and Lodi, so we see them often. My top love is travel and consequently I have turned my family into travel junkies. My most memorable trip was to Tanzania during the Serengeti Migration. My other interests at this moment include reading, playing bridge, painting, golfing and practicing piano. My best adventure was parachuting from 15,000 feet on my 60th birthday with my daughters. I remember the times at Del Valle being like the television show Happy Days.

Patty Erends DeRoos

Woodbridge, Manteca

I attended Buena Vista, Parkmead, Del Valle, DVC and San Francisco State. I met my husband, Jim, 43 years ago while teaching in South San Francisco. He was earning his teaching credential from USF after two tours in Vietnam as a Captain. The last five years of my career, I was a Reading Coach. I am grateful to have been a teacher in many grades! We have 3 children, Jon (Gina), Molly and Kate. Our grandchildren are Gwyneth (15) and Audriana (2). After 37 years of teaching and raising kids, we are enjoying retirement (Woodbridge, Manteca). I love walking, swimming laps, book clubs and playing in a Mah Jongg group. Our favorite trips include Costa Rica, Ireland and Hanalei, Hawaii. We love traveling the North Oregon Coast two or three times a year, staying at Otter Crest, touring Lighthouses and visiting my sister, Nancy, in McMinneville. Jim is active in our local VFW, serving in the Honor Guard at Veteran's Services. We still head to San Francisco often (Go Giants!), and belong to the Fine Arts Museums of S.F. An amazing blessing has been directing our church's food pantry for eight years! Being in relationship with the poor and marginalized in our community and writing their stories has illuminated my life and I am grateful!

Susan Fishel

Sacramento, CA

I left DVHS after freshman year, moving to Taft, CA. I graduated Taft UHS and UC Davis in 1969. From 1970 to 1989 I was married to an environmental engineer. We lived and worked in San Francisco (I for Chevron), Carmel (I as a social worker), and then we lived a nomadic life working overseas with assignments in Peshawar, Pakistan; Alexandria and Cairo, Egypt; Manila, Philippines; and Singapore. Upon our return to the states in 1986, we lived in Florida and the Washington, D.C. area where I worked as a realtor. Divorced in 1989 with no children, I went back to school for a paralegal degree. I landed a job with the largest intellectual property law firm in the country. While vacationing in the Bahamas, I met a Frenchman and we ended up commuting between D.C. and Nice, France for 2 years. I moved to France in 1992, living a wonderful life with him for 10 years on the French Riviera. For the last 2 years there, I worked with my law firm as a contractor on assignments in London and Paris. In 1990 I moved to Sacramento and worked in Davis as a contract administrator and accountant for an environmental engineering firm. I retired in 2011 and live in a 55+ community in Sacramento. My interest has been and remains travel. I also volunteer for the Public Defender, the Friends of the Library, and a local church food bank

Jeff Franklin

Pacifica, CA

The summer I graduated from D.V. I had a "European Vacation" with two H.S. classmates. We landed in London then by VW traveled to Paris, Biarritz, Pamplona for the Fiesta de San Fermin, Porto, Lisbon, Toledo, Madrid, Barcelona, Nice, Canne, Pisa, Florence, Rome, Salzburg, Munich & Amsterdam where we caught a plane home. Then I went to Cal Poly (I received my varsity letter in Swimming my freshman year! My grades sucked!) So it wasn't Engineering but English Literature for the B.A. During my senior year I helped a friend hang lights backstage at the college theatre for Alvin Ailey Dance Company. I thought I would try it so in S.F. I started taking modern dance classes then ballet. I traveled to N.Y. where I had a scholarship with American Ballet Theatre and with Joffrey Ballet. After two years of ballet I was in the S.F. Opera Ballet for two seasons & two years later traveled to Europe, auditioned at several Opera Houses in Germany & Holland and got a contract with the Frankfurt Ballet. There I met my wife, a Soloist with the ballet and lived and worked for eight years. We retired and moved back to San Francisco where I worked at my Father's (and Great Uncle before him) printing company Ben Franklin Press. I was President when my Father retired and upon selling the company, I worked as an Account Executive selling printing and packaging to corporations in the Bay Area. Now I manage two apartment buildings in S.F. that I bought with a business partner. My wife & I have lived in Pacifica View for 16 years. I'm still friends with schoolmates who I grew up with. We get together occasionally where the "kid" in us comes out pretty fast. Go to the "Stories and Quotes" page for my special memory.

Kathy Funk Wharton

Lafayette, CA

I attended Green Valley School in Danville through the 4th grade. We moved to Lafayette where I went to Burton and Fairview Schools before entering Del Valle. I received my degree from UC Davis in Child Development. I met my husband, Joe, at a Young Life Leadership conference and we were married in 1975. We have three married sons and seven grandchildren. The oldest, Tim, is a Naval Officer and has four children and lives in San Diego. The second, Steve, works for Pandora Radio, has one child and lives in Orinda. The youngest, Andrew, works for Oracle, has two children and lives in Bozeman, Montana. I was a stay at home mom with my own business in my home. I have a dress designing/home decor/sewing business that I have been able to bend around all of my much loved activities. Visiting our kids is always a joy, and I am always in training for the next century ride on my bicycle. I love to travel and do long distance hikes. Other than hiking in the bay area and the Sierras I have hiked the Coast to Coast Trek across England twice, The Tour du Mont Blanc, The Dachsteinrundwanderweg in Austria, Half Dome, and Waterton/Glacier Parks. This September we will be hiking The Offa’s Dyke Trail across Wales. Fond memories of Del Valle are attending the football games (especially when we were undefeated) and riding my horse to school on Sadie Hawkins Day.

Bill Gideon

Paul M Gruwell

Fairfield, CA

I spent all of my elementary school years at Parkmead before attending that brand new school, Del Valle. After graduation, I went off to Santa Cruz to attend another new school at that time...UCSC. Two years later found me transferring to Cal Berkeley. Worked for the Del Monte Corporation after completing some adventurous travels in South America. There I met my present wife, Maria, and we married in 1987. It was then I entered the world of oil refineries and worked with Chevron until accepting a job in Martinez that brought me to retirement in 2013. Through those times we raised 3 children...2 boys, 1 girl, that have all been wonderful so far! I still love to travel and do so when the urge becomes too great to ignore...see you soon.

Christine Hartzell

Montecito, Fairview, Del Valle. After high school I studied art at DVC, then on to engineering at UC Berkeley. In Berkeley I worked for a seller of antique instruments (my playing never improved much) and for the Lawrence Hall of Science. I was a technician and engineer at UC and at Hewlett Packard, taught at Merritt College, and programmed control systems for the City of San Francisco. Married Jim Carlson in 1984 (I didn't change my name.) I have one son, Jack, and a stepson, Carl, both living in the Bay Area. I don't, my husband and I moved to Michigan so that he could work in his father's business. At this point I paint (oil and watercolor), volunteer as a tax preparer with Tax Aide, teach art workshops and write websites for my clubs and friends. My mother still lives in Cleone (north of Mendocino) in the house she and my father bought when he retired. One fun memory I have of Del Valle is from the time “I Want to Hold Your Hand” was so insanely popular. Many people brought little semi-portable record players to school and played the song over and over and over during lunchtime.

Neil Hendricks

Grass Valley, CA

I began my education at Lafayette Elementary School, along with fellow kindergarten scholars Carolyn Hernandes, Jeff Franklin, and Mike Schneider. Then it was onto Burton Valley School, Fairview Junior High, and Del Valle. I graduated from St. Mary's College, majoring in Business Administration, and then did post- graduate work at Golden Gate College in San Francisco. I began working at a bar in S.F. called Henry Africa's to help finance my education. That temporary detour lasted thirty years in the bar/nightclub industry, which included being a partner at the Great American Music Hall in S.F., and the Cocoanut Grove in L.A. I lived in S.F. and L.A. in the 70's. In the 80's and 90's I lived in Marin and Sonoma counties. In 1997 I met my wife to be, Michele and got married at the ripe young age of 56. We now live in Lake Wildwood, a golfing community outside of Grass Valley. I still enjoy playing golf, practice yoga, and did enjoy skiing until my knees stopped cooperating. My wife and I have enjoyed traveling. We've made several excursions to Europe and Southeast Asia. I visited the Hanoi Hilton, and fortunately, was not invited for an extended stay. I still keep in touch with Del Valle classmates Jeff Froelich, Kent Lazarus, Jon Blegen, and Bill Gideon, via our quarterly grudge golf matches.

Tracy Howe

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Murwood Elementary & Parkmead for grades 6 to 8; Del Valle then, Diablo Valley JC. After taking several Civil Service exams I took a position at the Lake & 15th Military Hospital and left college. During my time spent there I also sang in a club in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. Toward the end of 1966, I moved to Canada to my parents farm of 160 acres. I chose to try living in the past. We had no running water, no indoors facilities, and no phone, but a generator for some electricity. I later married, had a son; and headed to Vancouver, B.C. to divorce in a very short time period. I was a waitress for a few years, and then had a career in the transportation industry. I took lots of courses relating to bus driving and later was active in bringing a first union contract to our employer. I took law courses, WCB and safety courses, Human Rights and Leadership training courses. I retired from city bus driving in 2012. My interests have a people based or animal based direction and travel. I worked with the VPD in their crime watch program and learning undercover techniques. I enjoyed being the dispatcher. While working, I was on many committees and the Retirement Dinner Committee was my favorite. We have traveled to South America, Antarctica, Mediterranean, the South Sea Islands, east coast of Canada and the US. Recently, I added an SPCA dog to my life and enjoy having her around. My son has a daughter.

Became a Certified Defense Financial Manager and Certified Fraud Examiner along the way. I have lived in Hawaii, Colorado, Germany, Okinawa, back to Hawaii, Japan, Virginia, Alabama, back to Virginia, then retirement in Hawaii 2007. We are active in church, including a recent 18-month mission trip to Japan to establish a new church in Kamaishi, one of the towns devastated by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Linda Johnson Parker

Walnut Creek, CA

We moved to Walnut Creek Jan. 1, 1950. I attended Pied Piper Nursery, Montecito, and Fairview. At University of the Pacific in Stockton, I was a sorority girl (Kappa Alpha Theta), and graduated in 1969 with BA in Psychology. I opted for independence over grad school and started with MetLife in SF. Fortunately, I was assigned to the “Group Insurance” department and that put me on track for a great 45 year career in employee benefits. Married and divorced Ron Parker, still a dear friend. Lived in Berkeley, Burlingame, SF and Orinda until 1979 when I accepted a group sales position with MetLife in NYC. One of two women in the country in that role. I figured I would stay a couple of years, but living and working in Manhattan was stimulating. In 1984 I left the insurance business for Employee Benefit consulting with Jardine then as Sr. VP in the Human Capital Practice for Willis. I retired March 20, 2014, and that same day, returned to Walnut Creek. Bryan, my partner of 8 years, is with me, and we are living happily ever after at Rossmoor. Started playing golf and got hooked. Darryl Koivisto

Our family arrived from MPLS-MN in June 1960, attended Fairview, and then Del Valle. I remember many friends from both schools, who had refreshing outlooks on education, sports, and life. Next, attended Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, University of Santa Clara, and Golden Gate University with several degrees (BSEE, MSEE, MBA, etc.). A little known electronics teacher, Wayne Farnholtz, at Del Valle helped guide me on my electronics career. Started at Signetics in Sunnyvale designing chips, moved on to Amdahl designing mainframes. Along the way was married, and divorced twice; a little too young maybe? Decided to shift gears a bit, and was CEO of a Farm, Construction Equipment company for several years, meeting some very down-to-earth farmers and ranchers just north of Santa Barbara. Then back to computers, helped design Shuttle communications in Sunnyvale with Ford Aerospace, as a program manager. Next, was part of Cadence, a computer-aided software company as a modeling and simulation consultant. Currently, CTO of a small startup, Mirabilis Design in Silicon Valley, that markets modeling and simulation software tools to such companies such as GoPro, Xylinx, GM Research, AF Research Labs, etc. In spare time like to cross country/downhill ski; hiking/fishing, photography, antique car shows, and study building architecture. Have traveled to over a dozen countries; especially liked Tuscany vineyards in Italy, Greek Islands, and Lake Geneva Switzerland. My advice, smile, it makes people wonder what you are thinking.

We love living in the foothills of the beautiful Sierra's. I went in the Navy in 1965, stationed in San Diego & Long Beach. We also love serving the Lord through church-related activities. I especially have a heart for those in need. My DVHS memory is a regret that I was more interested in upper classmen than my peers. In retrospect, I think our class was the best and I’m very grateful that I’m still good friends with my three best DVHS girlfriends, as well as some other classmates.

Steve Offen

La Jolla, CA

I snuck out of DVHS after having fooled teachers at Parkmead, Buena Vista, and Walnut Creek Elementary. I stymied my professor’s efforts in Physics, Math, and Reactor Engineering at Occidental, Cal Tech, and Southern Illinois U by messing about with computers. I was an Air Force pilot for 10 years, focused on beer and bars on three continents. No arrest records in: Topeka KS, Walnut Creek, Fortaleza Brazil, LA, Columbus Miss., Guam, New Baden Ill., San Jose, Colorado Springs, Dayton OH, Riyadh Saudi Arabia, or Stockholm Sweden. Charges might be pending in La Jolla CA. A poor husband to two fine wives (so far), I have two steps sons, David and Alan, and five step(?) grandkids: Owen, Molly, Avery, Brooks, and Ryder. Left the USAF to get paid to play with computers. Retired two years ago as Chief Dilettante – Software Development from a small (not my fault) logistics software company. Back to work a few days a week (at least that’s what they call it). At my age, I can hardly remember anything, but at Del Valle: Mrs. Nogeda’s purple shawl, enthusiastic (albeit untalented) participation in sports teams with the attendant tolerance of coaches and team mates, and a beautiful girl.

Diane Oliver

Walnut Creek, CA

I attended Buena Vista elementary, Parkmead intermediate, then DVHS. After high school, I went to Paris Beauty College and have lived in Walnut Creek except for a few years in Danville, CA. I am self employed and still working a few days a week in Lafayette as a manicurist (for nearly 40 years). I like staying active, it keeps me out of trouble. I have 2 children with Mike Leebody, a son, Tim 48, a daughter Michele 43 and grandson C.J. 71/2. They live in Concord and I fell very fortunate to have them close by, as getting together with family is my favorite. I enjoy talking long walks, movies, craft projects, home decorating and occasionally I can hold my own on the golf course. I have traveled to play golf in Pinehurst, North Carolina, Hawaii, Palm Desert and my favorite Pebble Beach. Currently I am living in Rossmoor and can visit our high school gym anytime. It looks great. I am enjoying my life as a baby boomer and a senior. Amazing 50 years gone by… Be happy everyone.

Gregory Osborne

Silver Springs, NV

After DVHS, I attended Diablo Valley College and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I have a masters degree in Quantum Physics. I’ve worked for National Semiconductor, Spectra Physics, Dynacon, Jensen Electric, and Nevatronics as an electronics design engineer. I have three children, Steve, Glenn, and Katherine, and two grandchildren, Quinn and Neo. I enjoy designing and building sports cars. I thought Del Valle was a good school; I have many good memories and very few bad ones. School was far too easy for me, so it became boring. Cal Poly was harder, but not by much.

Then I returned to San Francisco and had administrative positions for the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center for 20 years. I met my husband, Cliff, at UCSF. When we retired, we moved to the mountains of Arizona. We traveled extensively in the United States and Western Europe. My special memories of Del Valle are enjoying the dances, Prom, Ball, sporting events, various clubs and all the nice friends at Del Valle. Special thanks to all the people who made this Del Valle High School 50th Reunion, Class of 1965 possible.

Sandy Parsons Baker

Concord, CA

I attended Piedmont High School before joining our DVHS class during our freshman year. I’ve lived in Walnut Creek and Concord, working in accounting at UC Berkeley and then marketing in Concord. Currently I’m the financial manager for a periodontal surgeon. My husband Ken (Las Lomas 1964) and I have three children, Janie, Nikki, and Jenny, as well as four grandchildren, Jaylen, Max, Ella, and Sammy. Most of my free time is spent with my grandkids and their sports. My Del Valle memories include loving to drive Ken’s 1956 Chevy to school, and loving history, but hating English, although I loved to read books. I still hold the record for being married the longest – July 10, 1965. Ken and I just celebrated 50 years. Wow!

Gael Purdum Dahse

Kerrville, TX

Moved back to Texas from Lafayette in December 1966. Married in 1967 (48 years now!) to Byron Dahse. In 1969, we moved to Kerrville, TX where we have lived since then. We raised two terrific sons, Jeff, 45, Chris 42, here in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. We have two beautiful daughters in law, Sharon and Lacey and four precious grandchildren, Hannah, 8, Caleb 6, Noah 4, Piper 20 months. Byron still practices dentistry. I owned a women's clothing store here and in San Antonio for many years. After selling the business about ten years ago, I became a realtor. More recently I am helping with our two youngest grandchildren while my daughter in law works. Over the years, we were avid tennis players and enjoyed skiing, fishing and playing bridge. We have traveled a good deal, including several trips to Europe, Israel and our favorite, which was fishing with our boys in Alaska! Byron and I became Christians through Bible Study Fellowship about 25 years ago. I still marvel at the grace of The Lord Jesus Christ and the new life we have experienced through receiving His Gospel! We continue to be very involved in ministry. Our son, Chris pastors Citywest Church here in the Hill Country. Byron and I are privileged to serve there in various roles along with many others. I have been excited to reconnect with old friends from DVHS through Facebook! Looking forward to the reunion! See my favorite memory in the “Stories and Quotes” page.

Clark Radcliff

Okemos, Michigan

After DVHS, I attended UC Davis (BS ’69 and MS ’71 in Mechanical Engineering) and UC Berkeley (Ph.D. ’80 in Mechanical Engineering). I have lived where my schooling and employment have taken me: Davis; Yorktown, VA at the Coast Guard Officer Candidate School; Corpus Christi, TX as an Engineering Officer on the USCG Cutter Reliance; New London, CT as an Engineering Dept. Instructor at the US Coast Guard Academy; Berkeley as a Research Assistant and PhD student at UCB; and East Lansing and Okemos, MI as an Assistant, Associate and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Michigan State University. I retired in 2013. My wife, Arlene, and I have 3 children, Nate, Isadora, and Eliott, and 4 grandchildren. I have been a fisherman, sailboat sailor and radio controlled modeler all my adult life. Fishing and sailing motivated my family to build a log cabin in the woods near Lake Michigan starting in 1995, which has continued with projects to date. I keep a 16’ Hobie catamaran on the beach. The science labs I took at DVHS helped motivate me to become an engineer. I remember fondly many activities with friends – especially the Senior Prom. Have a great time at the reunion! Sorry I can’t join you.

Molly Rohan LaFayette

Brentwood, CA

I attended Holy Cross (Santa Cruz), Buena Vista and Parkmead Middle prior to DVHS, DVC and USF. I lived in Newport Beach, Morro Bay, Walnut Creek, Sacramento, Alamo and Brentwood. After a short stint at Morro Bay Park, my career began at Pacific Bell: business service rep, No Cal billing manager, business sales, Regulatory, LD carriers, and IT. After retirement, I became a substitute teacher for Lafayette School’s (primarily BV and Springhill). Jim and I blended our families (my two sons & his son and daughter) resulting in 5 grandsons and 3 granddaughters. We enjoy traveling and golf. Throughout these years I have been an active volunteer in our communities. I became involved in the Irish Dancing community when my 4 yr old granddaughter started dancing. We have traveled extensively together over the years. Our last trip this Easter was Montreal. Now at 23, and a certified dance teacher she doesn’t need a chaperone. I, now, realize what an educational opportunity I had at DVHS. Due to social media I have reconnected with several classmates as well as getting to know some of you better.

Lea Rom Peron

Sequim, Washington

Graduated from CSU, Chico. I lived and worked in Sacramento for 33 years, but have been living in Sequim for the past two years. Retired from the UC Davis Medical Center after having worked as a surgery nurse for 33 years. Widowed for a number of years, I enjoy spending time with friends and family; traveling in the U.S.; my home, dog, and garden; and reading and knitting. All of my DVHS memories were and are special.

Kim Rowley

Kauai, HI

Life is a banquet and I’m savoring every bite. How lucky to have grown up in Walnut Creek with the continuity of cherished friends and a solid education at Parkmead and Del Valle. Thank you Paul Newman and the ABC Television Network for employing me with a career that required ongoing lunches of baked potatoes and caviar at the Polo Lounge and munchies on the Hollywood sound stages of movie and sitcom productions. Serving as Director of National Publicity and Affiliate Relations for the launch of the Fox Broadcasting Company under Barry Diller was a horrific test of survival with little time for lunch. Marriage and a move to Evergreen, Colorado revived my sanity and provided time to add golf to my list of athletic pursuits. I became an author with the publication of my novel, “Primal Whispers.” My husband, Steve, and I are now living our dream in Kauai. Fortunately for me, Steve is a delicious cook.

Sandra (Sandy) Ruggles Jacobs

Sonoma, CA

I attended Buena Vista and Parkmead Intermediate before DVHS, Diablo Valley JC (A.A. ’67), and CSU Sonoma (B.A. Sociology 2005). I married Steve Jacobs in 1970 and moved to Sonoma. We started building our current home in 1978 and moved in it in 1984. I’ve been employed as a secretary, purchasing and sales for a cooling tower manufacturer, a stay-at-home mom, a teachers aid and as a secretary for the Director of Maintenance and Operations for Sonoma Valley Unified Schools. My husband, Steve, and I have two children, Drue 41, and Stacey 39. We have four grandchildren, Spencer 9, Mae, 6, Ethan 8 and Daylin 6. I enjoy volunteering in the classrooms, family activities, crafting, reading and enjoying my blessings. My DVHS memory is more a regret that I was not more outgoing and involved in more activities. I am looking forward to the reunion and reconnecting with everyone.

Judi Sategna Greenan

Citrus Heights, CA

I moved to Lafayette, CA in 1959 & attended Fairview before Del Valle. I graduated from S.F. State University with a BA in Home Economics. I have been married to my husband Bill for 44 years. He was a teacher & later a general contractor. Needless to say, being married to a general contractor meant lots of moves from S.F to Pacifica, Moss Beach & Auburn, Ca. Big move to Longwood, Fl. and finally back to Citrus Heights, Ca where we have lived since 1990. I worked for Wells Fargo Bank during college & afterward. I became a corporate instructor for an image consulting firm & traveled the Eastern & Southern states while in Florida. I was an avid water skier for 25 years & enjoyed many boating vacations- especially cruises. I have traveled to Mexico, Jamaica, Caribbean, Hawaii & Alaska. I have 2 children- Cyndi, 43 & Erik, 39+. I’m very proud of both of them. I have 2 grandchildren C.J. & Dillan who reside in Florida with Cyndi & hubby. I currently am a caregiver for my husband who has Alzheimer’s. I am working on a book about my experiences with Alz. Check out my special memories under “Stories and Quotes”

Alexa Schindler

Walnut Creek, CA

Walnut Heights, Montecito, Fairview came before DVHS & UC Davis (BA Bacteriology) & Stanford Univ. Med Center came after. Marrying Kerry (UCD BS civil engineering), I started as a Navy wife & medical technologist. Career military life not for us, we returned to the Bay Area (Kerry ’64 Napa HS) & have lived in Walnut Creek ever since! Continuing in labs, from large reference to small, I was lucky to work part-time while raising 3 kids as Kerry traveled the world in construction. All 3, Sean, 40 (Oakland) Kevin, 37 (Taiwan) & Kallie, 31 (SF), inherited the travel bug too! After 25 years in labs, I stayed in science but switched to caring for much smaller folks. I taught at WC Intermediate for 15 years, a most rewarding career ender, forming many friendships with fun colleagues. I even had the pleasure of teaching children/grandchildren of both current neighbors & boomers from the above WC schools. Retiring in 2012, I keep busy with daily hikes in WC Open Space, lap swimming, weight training, yoga, biking everywhere (WC traffic/parking NOT like in 1965!), CERT, visiting wineries, enjoying our mountain house, & travel. We are planning more trips to Ireland & Norway to trace our family roots.

Michael D Schneider

Lafayette, CA

I attended Lafayette and Burton Elementary moving on to Fairview before DVHS. Higher education was at Brown University and then UC Berkeley (AB ‘69/ MBA ‘71). I’ve lived and worked in Oakland, Orinda and back to Lafayette since 1992. Employed as a swim coach (wish I could have stayed in that career) real estate manager with Kaiser, then spent 40 years with the Learner Group retiring as CEO (2001) and Vice Chairman early this year. My wife of 42 years, Linda (Piedmont ‘65) and I have three grown children. We enjoy spending time at our second home in Hawaii which we built 30 years ago. I remain an avid wing shooter hunting both here locally and Central and South America. For the last 25 year I have traveled the world SCUBA diving. My wife and I are also involved in Christian related outreach. My special memory of Del Valle focuses on how we were provided a unique opportunity to build new friendships and traditions at a brand new high school. It is amazing that after 50 years that I still have more friends from the four years I spent at Del Valle than I do from my six years in higher education.

David K. Skidmore

I am married to Kristi Kruiswyk Skidmore (DVHS ’65) we now live in Clayton, California. I attended Parkmead Elementary and Intermediate Schools. Following High School graduation I attended BYU in Provo, Utah. After one year at BYU I lived in northern England for two years as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We lived in Bitburg, Germany for three years and then to Litchfield Park Arizona. I left the Air Force and moved to Clayton, California to operate my own newspaper distribution business for 35 years. We recently returned from living in Lusaka, Zambia for two years as missionaries. We have five children and eighteen grandchildren; they are my pride and joy. I enjoy golf, oil painting, photography and watching Kristi do gardening. The biggest amazement is looking back as how I grew up so naïve and innocent in High School.

We like to travel – usually driving no matter what country/continent/or side of the road. We also hike, work in the yard, golf (when I can find the time), and actively participate in the granddaughter activities. Reminiscing about the pre-Rossmoor DVHS days, they were so wonderfully different from today’s life - “if we only knew then”.

Sandra Spellman Brown

He had recently returned from a tour of duty in Vietnam. Six months later when he was discharged we moved to the Los Angeles area. In 1974 we were relocated to Rochester, New York for a year. Doug Swanson

Lincoln, CA

I joined the DVHS Class of 65 at the start of our sophomore year, moving to sunny California from the Chicago area. It was certainly a culture shock, but I made the transition easily due to sports and the ready acceptance of everybody. After Del Valle I went to Stanford and later to the Saint Mary's Executive MBA program. Since 1965 I have lived in Michigan (working for Ford), New Jersey and Washington D.C. (as a member of the Army - I was a "winner" in the first draft lottery) and then back to the Walnut Creek area (worked for a couple of small engineering firms and then 26 years with Chevron). Since 2005 I have lived in Lincoln, CA in a Del Webb community enjoying the golf courses, pickleball, softball and traveling in our RV. I married Marilee in 1993 and together we have 8 grand kids. Especially now that I am retired, I spend much of my time reading, traveling, engaging in a book club, shopping, Tai Chi classes, creating mosaics, and petting my cat Katie. My employment included Western Girl and Dean Witter. We’ve been living in Texas since 1972 and we both retired in 2009. We now can be together 24/7 and love it! Ralph is still my best friend after 49 years of marriage. We have a 4-year old Yorkie named Isabella Star (Izzie, for short). Ralph and I have one son, Michael, who retired from the USAF in 2013 as a Senior Master Sergeant. He has been all over the world – being stationed at Ramstein AFB, Germany and serving tours to Saudi Arabia, Iraq during Operation Freedom, and Afghanistan. After Ralph returned home from Vietnam, we remember hoping and praying that our son would never have to serve in a war, but God took good care of him. He has two daughters, 20 and 17. They are amazing girls – the older one majoring in nursing and the younger one a Junior in high school.

Kristin Young Gaylord

Walnut Creek, CA

After DVHS, I attended U.C.Davis and then DVC Dental Hygiene, graduating in '69 …beginning an enjoyable 44-year career. The last 30 years I practiced for a dentist in San Pablo, serving generations of our patients. I've lived in Fredericksburg, VA, Berkeley, CA (32 years) and am now back in Walnut Creek, living with my fiancé, Bruce Moen. Along with my hygiene work and single parenting, I had a small acupressure massage business and taught yoga. My son, Zack, and my grandchild, Sophie (8), live in Berkeley. I enjoy tending my gardens, yoga, hiking, house projects, and special time with family and friends. I've had many great years camping and backpacking, with memorable trips to Europe, China, Baja, Belize and several parts of the U.S. Bruce and I enjoy taking local, short get-a-ways along with occasional major trips sandwiched between the ever constant house projects. DVHS memory: I had so many wonderful teachers that helped open the world to me; and DV was such an amazingly beautiful campus. Our class was definitely fun and friendly…lots of adolescent silliness and laughter.
